The drive to Tawang is long, over high mountain passes. This home is a quiet place to land. It sits on a hillside, surrounded by trees and a small garden with flowers. The hosts, Norbuji, his wife Jombey, and their son Lobsang, live here and run the home. Guests say they make you feel like part of the family from the moment you arrive. The home has seven bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The rooms are simple and clean, with solid wooden furniture and warm blankets. Some rooms have three single beds, others have a king bed. Heaters and electric kettles are provided. As one guest, Guy Raz, wrote, “The rooms are spacious, cozy, and tastefully designed. Everything is new, clean, and smells wonderful.” The heart of the home is the large kitchen. There is a firewood stove where guests sometimes gather in the evening, and a large dining table where meals are shared. The food is homely and cooked by Jombey. Another guest, Keerty Mavuru, said the “hosting family is so humble and utmost caring that we almost felt like emotional farewell when we left the place.” Outside, there is a small wooden bamboo hut with string lights, where breakfast is often served. It looks out over the valley. The village is pastoral and quiet, a place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse, is the largest monastery in India. Founded in the 17th century, it's a sprawling complex that houses hundreds of monks and offers a commanding view of the Tawang Chu valley. It is best visited in the morning to witness the prayers.

Sela Pass, at an altitude of 4,170 meters, is the high mountain gateway to Tawang. The pass is often covered in snow and is home to the serene Sela Lake, which remains frozen for much of the winter. The drive itself is a key part of the experience.

Madhuri Lake, originally Sangetsar Tso, is about 45km from Tawang. It was formed by an earthquake and is now a picturesque spot with dead tree trunks rising from the clear water. The lake was famously featured in a Bollywood film, giving it its popular name.

Bumla Pass, on the Indo-China border, is about 37km from Tawang. Visiting requires a special permit, which your hosts can help arrange. The journey takes you through rugged, high-altitude terrain to a viewpoint of the Line of Actual Control.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), Assam, about 480km away. The drive from Guwahati to Tawang takes at least two days with an overnight stop, usually in Bomdila or Dirang. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is closer at 320km, but has fewer flight connections.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Rangapara North (RPAN) in Assam, approximately 280km from Tawang. From there, you will need to hire a taxi or take a shared vehicle for the multi-day road journey.

By Road: The road to Tawang is a challenging but scenic mountain drive. The journey typically starts from Guwahati or Tezpur in Assam. All vehicles enter Arunachal Pradesh at the Bhalukpong checkpost, where Inner Line Permits are verified. The route passes through Bomdila (165km from Tawang) and over the Sela Pass. Expect drives to take 8-10 hours between major stops.

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Tawang is from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the landscape is green and accessible. September is a particularly good month, coinciding with the Ziro Music Festival in the wider region, which brings a vibrant energy to Arunachal.

Winters, from December to February, are harsh. Heavy snowfall often closes Sela Pass, which can cut off road access to Tawang for days at a time. If you travel in winter, be prepared for extreme cold and potential travel disruptions.
