“What a lovely place! We were a family of 14 and had an absolutely comfortable and memorable stay at Ladho Homestay, Tawang. The rooms were clean and cozy, and the bed warmers were a big relief in the cold weather. They also provided hot water flasks for drinking, which was very thoughtful and convenient. The food was delicious—especially the vegetarian thali...”

Tawang is a place of high passes and deep history. A short drive takes you to Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse. Founded in the 17th century, it is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world.
Drive up to Sela Pass, at an altitude of 4,170 metres. The pass connects Tawang to the rest of the country and is home to the serene Sela Lake, which often remains frozen through the winter. The views from here are vast.
About 45 km from Tawang is Sangetsar Tso, popularly known as Madhuri Lake after the Bollywood film shot here. It’s a high-altitude lake formed by an earthquake, with tree trunks still rising from its clear waters.
For a view of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), you can take a trip to Bumla Pass, 37 km from Tawang. The journey requires a separate permit, but the experience of standing at the Indo-China border is a powerful one.
While it's a multi-day journey from Tawang, many travellers on a longer Arunachal circuit also visit Ziro Valley, the heartland of the Apatani tribe, known for its unique paddy-and-fish cultivation and bamboo terraces.
By Air: The most reliable major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 480 km away. From Guwahati, it is a 2-day drive to Tawang with an overnight stop, usually in Bomdila. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is closer at 320 km, but has fewer flight connections.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Rangapara North Junction (RPAN) in Assam, approximately 280 km from Tawang. You will need to hire a taxi from the station for the 10-12 hour mountain drive.
By Road: The journey to Tawang is an experience in itself. You enter Arunachal Pradesh at Bhalukpong, where your Inner Line Permit is checked. The road climbs steadily to Bomdila (165 km), a common halt for the night. From Bomdila, it’s another long drive to Tawang (155 km) via the high-altitude Sela Pass (4,170m).
The best months to visit Tawang are from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. September is a great time to visit if your trip includes the Ziro Music Festival. The winter months, from December to February, bring heavy snowfall, often leading to the closure of Sela Pass and cutting off road access to Tawang.
