The first thing you notice is the quiet, and the light. Big windows look out onto the Spiti landscape, the river carving its way through the valley below. The sun hits the high peaks first thing in the morning. The home has four bedrooms and four bathrooms, with space for up to eight guests. The rooms are simple and clean, built in the local style with mud walls and wood interiors that hold the day’s warmth. Beds are fitted with electric heating pads, a small comfort against the cold desert nights. There is a fireplace in a common area for colder evenings. Things to do nearby.

Kaza is the main town in the Spiti Valley, and a good point from which to explore the region's high-altitude monasteries and villages.

Key Monastery is about 12 km from Kaza. It is the largest monastery in Spiti, nearly a thousand years old, and sits on a conical hill overlooking the valley. The prayer halls are filled with old murals and thangkas.

Kibber village, at 4,270 meters, is one of the highest motorable villages in the world. It’s a short drive from Key and gives you a sense of the stark beauty of life at this altitude.

The Chicham Bridge connects Kibber to the nearby village of Chicham. It is Asia’s highest suspension bridge, hanging over a deep gorge. Crossing it on foot or by car is a memorable part of the Spiti circuit.

Pin Valley National Park is a high-altitude park that is home to the snow leopard and the Siberian ibex. The landscape is rugged and bare, and the park is best explored with a local guide.

Langza village is famous for its large Buddha statue overlooking the valley and for the marine fossils found in the area, remnants of a time when the Himalayas were under the Tethys Sea.

Getting there.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) near Kullu, about 220 km away. The road from Bhuntar to Kaza goes via Manali and the Kunzum Pass, and is only open from June to October. The other option is Shimla Airport (SLV), which is 410 km away via the Kinnaur valley.

By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Shimla (410 km), connected to Kalka by the narrow-gauge toy train. From Shimla, you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus for the two-day journey to Kaza.

By Road: Kaza can be reached by two main routes. The road from Manali (200 km) via the Rohtang and Kunzum passes is shorter but is only open from June to October. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended. The road from Shimla (410 km) via Kinnaur is longer but stays open for more months of the year, typically from April to November.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The main tourist season is from May to October, when the road from Manali is open and the weather is pleasant during the day. This is the best time for road trips and trekking.

From November to April, the Manali-Kaza highway is closed due to heavy snow on the high passes. Spiti is still accessible via the road from Shimla and Kinnaur, but it is extremely cold. This is a time for travelers seeking solitude and the stark beauty of a Himalayan winter.
