“A simple home in Kaza, run by Dorje and his family. This isn't a hotel, it's a place where guests are treated like family. Expect hot tea after a long ride, shared meals, and help with everything from finding petrol to a 4:30am ride to the bus stand. The six rooms are clean and warm, with hot water, but the real reason to stay is the people. It's a quiet, friendly base for exploring the Spiti valley.”

A look around
What's here
The road to Kaza is long. You arrive tired, cold, and hungry. The first thing you get here is a hot cup of tea. This home is run by Dorje and his family, and their care is what defines a stay here. The house has six simple, clean bedrooms, each with an attached bathroom and hot water. The rooms are lined with wood panelling, keeping the high-altitude chill out. There is ample parking space for cars and motorcycles right outside. The stay is less about the rooms and more about the feeling of being looked after. As one guest put it, "This place was my home when I was far from my home." The food is a constant in guest reviews. It’s fresh, locally sourced, and exactly what you need after a day of exploring. The family often shares meals with guests, turning a simple dinner into a warm conversation. "What struck us most was their willingness to share meals with us, breaking the traditional guest-host barrier and making us feel truly at home." The hosts are known for their genuine help. Guests have shared stories of Dorje arranging petrol when the town pump was shut, or his father offering a ride to the bus stand at 4:30 in the morning, unasked. It’s this spirit that makes the place what it is. "It’s rare to meet hosts who are not just hospitable but genuinely care for their guests."

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

Kaza is the main town and an ideal base for exploring the Spiti Valley.

The Spiti Circuit is the main draw. This includes a visit to the iconic Ki Monastery, perched on a hilltop, and the village of Kibber, once one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. These are typically day trips from Kaza. The roads are rough, but the landscapes of barren, multi-hued mountains are worth the journey. This circuit is only accessible by road from Manali between June and October when the high passes are clear of snow.

The Atal Tunnel and Solang Valley are on the Manali side of the journey into Spiti. The 9km Atal Tunnel provides year-round access to Lahaul from Manali, cutting down travel time significantly and bypassing the treacherous Rohtang Pass.

Logistics

Getting there.

By Road: Kaza is accessible via two main routes. The most common is from Manali (approx. 200 km), a journey of 8-10 hours over the high-altitude Kunzum Pass. This route is only open from June to October. The other route is from Shimla via the Kinnaur valley (approx. 450 km), which is a longer, two-day drive but stays open for more of the year.

By Air: The nearest airport for the Manali route is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu. For the Shimla route, the airport is at Jubbarhatti (SLV), though flights are limited. The most reliable, all-weather airport is Chandigarh (IXC), from where you can hire a taxi for the multi-day drive.

By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, you would continue by road. For the Shimla route, you can take the UNESCO heritage toy train from Kalka to Shimla and then proceed by road.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Spiti is from June to October. This is when the snow has melted on the high passes, and the roads from Manali are open. The weather is pleasant during the day, though nights are always cold. September and October offer crisp, clear skies after the monsoon, with brilliant blue skies against the brown mountains. Winters (December to February) are extremely harsh, with heavy snowfall cutting off road access completely.
