The sound of Tawang is muted up here. Just the wind in the prayer flags. This is a simple, family-run home, built for the realities of the high Himalaya. The view from the terrace looks over the town’s corrugated roofs towards the distant mountain ridges, often hazy in the morning light. The home has three bedrooms and three attached bathrooms, accommodating up to six guests. The rooms are straightforward and clean, with wooden beds, warm blankets, and rugs on the floor. Large windows let in the mountain light. There is a common seating area and a terrace, lined with the host's potted flowers, which is a good place to sit in the sun. This is not a hotel. Tawang is a base for exploring the region’s high-altitude monasteries and landscapes. Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse, is the largest in India and the second largest in the world. It’s a 17th-century complex that sits on a ridge overlooking the valley.

Sela Pass, at an altitude of 4,170 meters, is the high-altitude gateway to Tawang. The drive is spectacular, and the pass is home to the frozen Sela Lake for much of the winter. The road can close in heavy snow.

Madhuri Lake, officially Sangetsar Tso, is about 45km from Tawang. It was formed by an earthquake and is named after the actress Madhuri Dixit, who filmed a song sequence here. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

For those on a longer journey, the Ziro Valley is the heartland of the Apatani tribe, known for its unique paddy-and-bamboo terrace farming. It’s a different world from Tawang and hosts the popular Ziro Music Festival every September.

Bumla Pass, on the India-China border, is 37km from Tawang. It’s a viewpoint at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and requires a special permit to visit, which can be arranged in Tawang.

Getting there.

The journey to Tawang is a significant part of the experience. It is a multi-day drive through the Eastern Himalayas.

By air: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 480km away. The drive from Guwahati to Tawang takes at least two days. The closer but smaller Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is 320km away, but has fewer flight connections.

By rail: The nearest railway station is Rangapara North (RPAN) in Assam, approximately 280km from Tawang. From there, you will need to hire a taxi or take a shared vehicle for the two-day road journey.

By road: The drive to Tawang is scenic and challenging. Most travelers start from Guwahati or Tezpur in Assam. The route passes through Bhalukpong, where Inner Line Permits are checked, and typically involves an overnight halt in Bomdila (165km from Tawang) or Dirang. The final leg crosses the high-altitude Sela Pass (4,170m).

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best months to visit Tawang are from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. Spring (March-April) sees rhododendrons in bloom. September is a good month, clear after the monsoon, and coincides with the Ziro Music Festival for those extending their trip.

Winters (December to February) are very cold, with heavy snowfall. Sela Pass is often closed during this period, which can cut off road access to Tawang.
