Darjeeling is the queen of the hills for a reason. A short drive from the home gets you to the town centre, and from there, the region opens up.

The most famous local ritual is the sunrise at Tiger Hill, about 11 kilometres from Darjeeling town. On a clear morning, the first rays of light hit the peak of Kanchenjunga, turning it from grey to pink to gold. It requires an early start, around 4 am, but the view is worth it.

For a slower day, visit one of the local tea estates like Happy Valley or Glenburn. You can walk through the gardens, see the tea-pickers at work, and finish with a tasting session to understand the difference between first and second flush.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a living piece of history. You don't need to take the full journey to NJP. The two-hour 'joyride' loop from Darjeeling to Ghum and back is enough to experience the charm of the steam-powered toy train.

For serious trekkers, Darjeeling is the gateway to the Singalila ridge. The trek to Sandakphu offers a rare panorama of five of the world's highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru. This is a multi-day trek and requires a guide and permits.

Back in town, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is one of the best in India, specializing in high-altitude species like the red panda and snow leopard. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), founded by Tenzing Norgay after his Everest ascent.

Getting there.

The main entry point to the region is the plains city of Siliguri. From there, it's a steep and winding drive up to Darjeeling.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), located about 90 kilometres from Darjeeling. The drive takes around three hours, depending on traffic, via the scenic roads through Mirik or Kurseong.

By Rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the closest major railway station, about 88 kilometres away. It connects the region to Kolkata, Delhi, and other major Indian cities. From NJP, you can hire a private car or find a shared jeep to Darjeeling. The historic toy train also runs from NJP, but it's a slow, eight-hour journey best treated as an experience in itself.

By Road: Siliguri is the main road hub, 75 kilometres from Darjeeling. Shared jeeps and buses run frequently between Siliguri and Darjeeling town.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit is from October to mid-June. The post-monsoon months of October and November offer crisp air and the clearest mountain views. Spring, from March to May, is also pleasant, with rhododendrons in bloom across the hills.

The monsoon season, from late June to September, brings heavy rain. While the landscape is lush and green, the rain can cause landslides, leading to road closures on NH10 and the Pankhabari road. Travel during July and August can be unpredictable.
