A look around
What's here
The home is one of a few cottages with gabled roofs, set against a steep green hill in the village of Sittong. The first thing you notice is the quiet, and the sound of a river flowing nearby. Inside, the space is simple and clean. There is one bedroom with a double bed, and an attached bathroom with a shower. The bedroom opens onto a small private balcony, a good spot for morning tea while looking out at the hills. The home sleeps up to two guests. Guests have access to a kitchen to prepare their own meals. In the evenings, a bonfire can be arranged in the garden area. The hosts are known for their warmth, as one guest put it, they "were warm and welcoming, making us feel like family." Another guest noted, "Having a river nearby made the place even more peaceful."

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

The home is a good starting point for exploring the Darjeeling-Kalimpong hills. A popular local activity is the trek to Lepcha Falls, which a guest called their "lifetime experience." The river is also a short walk away.

For day trips, you can drive to see the sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, about 11km from Darjeeling town. The working tea estates of Happy Valley and Glenburn offer tours and tastings. A joyride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the UNESCO-heritage toy train, is a two-hour loop from Darjeeling to Ghum and back. For serious trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek to Sandakphu offers a rare five-peak view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru. In Darjeeling town, you can visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Tenzing Norgay's former home.

Logistics

Getting there.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km from Darjeeling, which is a 3-hour drive via the scenic routes of Mirik or Kurseong. The main railhead for the region is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), 88km from Darjeeling. Siliguri, 75km away, is the main hub in the plains where you can find shared jeeps to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and other hill towns. The property is in Sittong, a smaller village in the Darjeeling district.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best season to visit is from October to mid-June, when the skies are clear and the weather is pleasant. The monsoon season, from late June to September, brings heavy rain which can cause landslides on the main highways like NH10 and the Pankhabari road, making travel unpredictable.
