Bumla Pass, at the India-China border (Line of Actual Control), is a 37km drive from Tawang. The journey requires a special permit, which the hosts can help you arrange. The high-altitude terrain is accessible only by 4x4 vehicles.
Ziro Valley is the heartland of the Apatani people, known for their unique agricultural system of rice and fish cultivation. While a longer journey from Tawang, it's a key cultural stop in Arunachal, especially during the Ziro Music Festival in September.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Guwahati (GAU), 480km away. It's the most reliable entry point, from where a two-day drive is required to reach Tawang. Tezpur (TEZ) is closer at 320km, but has fewer flight connections.
By Rail: The nearest railhead is Rangapara North Railway Station (RPAN), about 280km from Tawang. From there, you'll need to hire a taxi for the road journey.
By Road: The road journey begins from Assam, entering Arunachal at the Bhalukpong checkpost where your Inner Line Permit will be checked. The drive to Tawang typically includes an overnight stop in Bomdila, which is about halfway. The final leg of the journey takes you over the dramatic Sela Pass.
The best months to visit Tawang are from March to October, when the weather is pleasant and the roads are generally clear. September is particularly vibrant, coinciding with the Ziro Music Festival in the wider region. The winter months, from December to February, bring heavy snowfall, which can lead to the closure of Sela Pass, cutting off road access to Tawang.
