Kaza is the administrative heart of Spiti, making it a good anchor for exploring the region. A short drive takes you to Key Monastery, the largest in Spiti. It's a thousand-year-old complex perched on a conical hill, a classic Spiti photograph.
From Key, the road climbs to Kibber, one of the highest motorable villages in the world at 4,270 metres. The drive continues to the Chicham Bridge, an astonishing suspension bridge spanning a deep gorge - it's considered the highest in Asia.
For wildlife, Pin Valley National Park is snow leopard country. While sightings are rare and usually require a winter expedition, the stark beauty of the valley is a draw in itself.
Closer to Kaza, the villages of Langza, Hikkim, and Komic form a popular circuit. Langza is famous for its large Buddha statue overlooking the valley and the ease with which you can find million-year-old marine fossils in the surrounding hills.
By Air: The two nearest airports are Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, about 220 km away via the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass, and Shimla Airport (SLV), about 410 km away. The Bhuntar route is faster but only open when the passes are clear.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, you can take a bus or taxi. The historic toy train runs to Shimla, which is still a 410 km drive from Kaza.
By Road: Kaza is accessible by two main routes. The road from Manali (200 km) is shorter and more dramatic, crossing the high passes of Rohtang and Kunzum. It is only open from June to October and a 4x4 is strongly recommended. The longer route from Shimla (410 km) via Kinnaur Valley is open for more of the year, typically from April to November, and is a more gradual ascent.
The best time to visit Spiti by road is from May to October, when both the Manali and Shimla routes are typically open. The weather is pleasant, the days are long, and the high passes are accessible.
From November to April, the road from Manali via Kunzum La is closed due to heavy snow. During these months, Spiti is only reachable from the Shimla side. Winter is harsh and cold, but it offers a unique, silent landscape and the best chances of spotting a snow leopard.
