The home is a good starting point for exploring the main sights of Spiti. Key Monastery, the largest in the valley, is visible from your window and a short drive away. It is best to visit in the morning to witness the monks' prayers.
Further on, you reach Kibber village, which at 4,270 metres is one of the highest motorable villages in the world. From here, a drive across the Chicham bridge - Asia's highest suspension bridge - offers a dizzying view of the gorge below.
For wildlife enthusiasts, Pin Valley National Park is snow leopard country. While sightings are rare and require patience, the stark beauty of the park is a reward in itself. Nearer to Kaza, the villages of Langza, Hikkim, and Komic are known for their high-altitude life and ancient fossils, easily found scattered on the ground.
By Air: The nearest airports are Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, about 220 km away via the Manali-Kaza road, and Shimla Airport (SLV), about 410 km away. The road from Bhuntar crosses the high-altitude Kunzum Pass and is only open in the summer.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Shimla (410 km), which is connected to Kalka by the historic toy train. From Shimla, you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus for the multi-day journey to Kaza.
By Road: There are two main road routes to Spiti. The route from Manali (200 km) is shorter but only open from June to October and requires a capable 4x4 vehicle. The longer route from Shimla (410 km) via Kinnaur is open for more months of the year (typically April to November) and allows for more gradual acclimatization. Kaza itself is the district headquarters and has a fuel station, market, and ATMs.
The best time to travel to Spiti by road is from May to October, when both the Manali and Shimla routes are typically open. The weather is pleasant with clear skies and sunny days. From November to April, the road from Manali and the Kunzum Pass are closed due to heavy snowfall. During these winter months, Spiti is only accessible from the Shimla side, and the valley is covered in a thick blanket of snow.
