On the rare clear day, the valley toward Bangladesh is endless. - Khasi village life. Mawsynram village has functioning matrilineal customs and a 900 plus year old stone memorial circle.

What about when to visit?

Most first-time visitors go October to February when the weather is clear. The rain-chasers come in July.

What about how to reach mawsynram?

- From Shillong: 60 km, 2 hours drive - From Cherrapunji: 15 km, 30 minutes drive - Shared taxis from Shillong Bara Bazaar run till early afternoon - Private cab from Shillong is ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 for a day trip

What about mawjymbuin cave?

The main attraction. 20 to 30 minute walk through a lit cave, ending at a natural Shivling formation. Small entry fee. Crowded on weekends, quiet on weekdays.

What about rain forest viewpoint?

On a clear day, the viewpoint looks out over Khasi hills toward Bangladesh. On a rainy day, you see cloud.

What about split rock and canyons?

Lesser-known viewpoints past the village. Ask your homestay host for the trail.

What about stone monolith circle (mawsynram kynrem)?

Ancient stone memorial site on the edge of the village. Worth 30 minutes.

What about where to stay?

Mawsynram has a small homestay scene. Two or three village homestays run by Khasi families. Book direct, expect basic: attached bathroom, bucket hot water, home-cooked food.

What about packing for mawsynram?

1. Full rain jacket plus rain pants in monsoon. Umbrellas do not work in the wind. 2. Waterproof shoes. Every trail is slippery. 3. Dry bag for phone and wallet. 4. Quick-dry change of clothes. 5. Basic first aid. Village pharmacies are limited.

1. Never drive after 4 pm in monsoon. Fog and landslides are real. 2. Keep a buffer day. NH6 from Shillong to Sohra closes on big-rain days. 3. Cash only in the village. UPI signal is weak past the cafe. 4. Respect matrilineal culture. Ask before photographing women or homes. 5. Do not expect a "record" plaque. The rain gauge station is government-managed, not a tourist spot.
