What about who can register?

A homestay here means a place where the owner and family physically live in the same residence and let out one to six rooms (12 beds maximum) to tourists for lodging and boarding. The building must be registered as a residential unit with the local authority. Joint owners need no-objection letters from the other owners. Leased property qualifies only where the government is the lessor and the lease is solely residential.

What about grades and fees?

Grades follow a facilities checklist. Silver is a comfortable room with shared washrooms, Gold adds private attached bathrooms and more amenities, and Platinum adds larger rooms, a king bed, a safe and a workstation.

What about the process?

1. Apply online on www.gujarattourism.com and pay the fee online. 2. The office scrutinises the application against the checklist. 3. Get a police verification certificate from your local police station. 4. A qualified agency appointed by the Commissioner of Tourism inspects the property. 5. A classification committee decides and the Commissioner issues the certificate. You may start operating only after you receive it.

What about what you get?

The policy lists residential electricity rates and residential municipal property and water tax rates instead of commercial ones, one-time training and marketing guidance from the Commissioner's office, and eligibility for the state's rooftop solar subsidy for residential units.

What about what you must keep doing?

- Display your room, meal and breakfast charges, and tell guests in advance - Keep a guest register and a copy of each guest's ID and address proof - Follow local police safety guidance, and do not misuse guest data or CCTV recordings - Display the registration certificate where tourists can see it - Tell the office within 30 days of any change to facilities, and immediately about any change of ownership

How many rooms can a Gujarat homestay have?

One to six rooms, with a maximum of 12 beds, and the owner's family must live in the same residence.

How much does Gujarat homestay registration cost?

The policy lists Rs 500 for Silver, Rs 1,000 for Gold and Rs 2,000 for Platinum on new registration, with renewal at half of that. Confirm on the portal.

How long is the certificate valid?

Two years. Renew online at least 30 days before expiry.

Do I need police verification?

Yes. The policy requires a police verification certificate from the local police station.

Can I register a rented home?

Only where the government is the lessor and the lease is purely residential. Private leases are not covered by this policy.
