What about what ical sync actually is?

Every major booking site can produce an iCal link (a web address ending in .ics) that lists the dates on your calendar that are booked or blocked. Another site can read that link and block those same dates on its own calendar.

What about how to set it up (the general method)?

Menu names change, so look for "Calendar" and "Sync calendars" or "Import / Export calendar" in each host dashboard.

What about why double bookings still happen with ical?

- The delay. Two guests can book inside the same refresh window. - A manual block on one site only. If you block dates for family use on a site that does not export, the others never learn. - A broken or expired link. If a link is regenerated or deleted, the other site keeps the old picture or stops updating without telling you. - Same-day turnaround. iCal handles whole nights only, so check-in and check-out timing rules can disagree.

What about how to reduce the risk?

- Keep one master calendar you edit first, and treat every site as a copy of it. - Add a one-night buffer on busy weekends if you have had overlaps before. - Check the sync weekly and after any change to a listing. - Reply fast when a clash happens. Offer the second guest another room or dates, or cancel on the site that allows host cancellation with the least penalty, and read that site's rules first.

What about when to move from ical to a channel manager?

iCal is fine for one or two properties on two sites. A channel manager is worth it when:

How often does iCal sync update?

That is decided by the site that imports your link, not by you, and it can take several hours. Treat iCal as near-real-time at best, not instant.

Does iCal sync prices?

No. It only carries blocked or booked dates. Prices, minimum stays and discounts are set separately on each site.

Yes. It is a built-in feature on the major booking sites, with no fee to export or import a calendar.

Can iCal fully stop double bookings?

No. It reduces them a lot, but the delay between refreshes means a clash is still possible, especially in busy season.

Which sites support iCal?

Airbnb, Booking.com, Agoda and most other booking sites let you export or import an iCal calendar, but check each dashboard because the menus differ.
