SUNDAY CLOSURES Meghalaya is 75% Christian. Don Bosco Museum, Mawsmai Cave, and many shops close on Sundays. Plan your Shillong and Cherrapunji days around this. Most places outside Shillong close by 8:30 PM. KREM CHYMPE - CRITICAL PREP - Swimming ability is ESSENTIAL. You cannot explore the cave without swimming through underground pools. - Bring a headlamp (not phone torch - you need both hands free on wet rock) - You WILL get completely soaked. Pack a full change of dry clothes in a waterproof bag. - The cave is cold inside. Expect water temperature around 15-18C. - Listen to your guide at all times. Do not wander into unexplored passages. - The trek to the cave (2 hrs) is itself moderately challenging - forest, boulders, riverbeds. SHILLONG NIGHTLIFE GUIDE Shillong is India's Rock Capital - live music is common, especially on weekends. - Cloud 9 (Hotel Centre Point): Iconic club, theme nights, open 1 PM-12 AM - Polo Irish Pub (Hotel Polo Towers): Laid-back, huge beer selection, sports screens - Dylan's Cafe: Bob Dylan tribute, board games, live music, great food - Platinum (Polo Grounds): Ultra-lounge nightclub - Laitumkhrah neighborhood: Cafes and lounges that stay lively after dark Most places wind down by 10:30 PM. Download offline maps before leaving Shillong on Day 5 - you won't have reliable signal for 4 days. USEFUL KHASI PHRASES "Khublei" = Thank you. "Phi long kumno?" = How are you? "Kumno ka jingshisha?" = How much? CULTURE Meghalaya is matrilineal - children take mother's surname. The Khasi (east) and Garo (west) are distinct tribes with different languages and customs. Ask before photographing people. Don't litter (Mawlynnong sets the standard). English is widely spoken in towns, less so in villages. PHOTOGRAPHY Best light for Dawki: before 9 AM on sunny days. Laitlum Canyons: early morning before fog. Waterfalls: ND filter for long exposures. Krem Chympe: headlamp + waterproof camera/GoPro essential. Polarizing filter for Dawki and Wari Chora water clarity.
