Assam Explorer: Guwahati & Kaziranga Wildlife Safari

Guwahati

• 10:00Arrive Guwahati Airport (GAU). Pickup and transfer to hotel (30 min). Freshen up.
• 11:30Kamakhya Temple — one of India's most important Shakti Peethas, perched on Nilachal Hill overlooking the Brahmaputra. Ancient temple with distinctive beehive-shaped shikhara. Remove shoes, expect queues (1-2 hrs on weekends). Photography restricted inside.
• 14:00Lunch at a local Assamese restaurant — try masor tenga (sour fish curry) and khar.
• 15:30Umananda Temple — take a ferry across the Brahmaputra to Peacock Island. Small Shiva temple surrounded by golden langurs.
• 17:00Brahmaputra sunset cruise (1 hour) — watch the sun set over the world's widest river. Tea and snacks on board. Stunning light for photography.
• 19:00Dinner at Guwahati. Try Paradise restaurant on GS Road for Assamese thali.

Kaziranga

• 07:00Breakfast. Check out.
• 08:00Drive to Kaziranga (230 km, 5 hrs via NH37). The road follows the Brahmaputra — flat, green, lined with tea gardens. Stop at Jakhalabandha for lunch.
• 13:30Arrive Vaani Greens Kaziranga Wildlife Resort. Check in to your room — the resort is set inside a working Kanchanjuri Tea Estate with geodesic domes, luxury tents, and heritage bungalows. Pool, spa, and direct views of the tea gardens.
• 15:30Guided tea estate walk — learn about Assam's orthodox and CTC tea processing. Pluck your own tea leaves, watch the rolling and drying process. Tasting session with 3-4 varieties.
• 17:30Relax at the resort pool or garden. The tea estate at sunset is magical — golden light on green bushes.
• 19:30Dinner at resort — Vaani Greens serves Assamese, North Indian, and Continental cuisine.
• 21:00Early night — elephant safari at 5:30 AM tomorrow.

Kaziranga

• 05:15Wake up. Hot tea at the resort.
• 05:30Elephant safari — Central Range (Kohora). Ride atop an elephant through the tall grasslands at dawn. This is the BEST way to see rhinos up close — elephants can go deep into the grass where jeeps can't reach. 97% chance of spotting one-horned rhinos. Also look for wild buffalo, swamp deer, and hog deer. 1-hour ride.
• 07:00Return to resort. Hot breakfast.
• 08:30Jeep safari — Central Range (Kohora). 2.5-hour safari through Kaziranga's most popular range. Highest density of rhinos. Also spot elephants, wild buffalo, and birdlife. Your naturalist guide knows every watering hole.
• 11:30Return to resort. Rest and lunch.
• 14:30Kaziranga Orchid & Biodiversity Park — a curated park showcasing Assam's orchids, medicinal plants, and butterflies. Relaxed afternoon activity.
• 17:00Free evening at Vaani Greens. Optional: bonfire in the tea garden (winter months).
• 19:30Dinner at resort.

Kaziranga

• 06:00Early wake-up for morning light.
• 06:30Jeep safari — Western Range (Bagori). The best-maintained range with excellent wildlife sightings. Fewer tourists than Central. Great for rhino mothers with calves, elephant herds, and hoolock gibbons. Your naturalist will spot what you miss.
• 09:30Return to resort. Breakfast.
• 11:00Relax at the resort. Pool, spa, or read in the garden.
• 14:00Jeep safari — Eastern Range (Agartoli). Remote and wild. Known for large herds of wild buffalo (up to 100 animals), swamp deer, and excellent birdwatching — adjutant storks, pelicans, eagles, kingfishers. Less crowded, more immersive.
• 17:00Visit a Mishing tribal village near Kaziranga. The Mishing are river people — see their stilt houses, weaving, and rice beer brewing. Warm and welcoming community.
• 19:00Farewell dinner at resort. Last night in the tea estate.

Guwahati

• 06:30Optional: sunrise from the tea estate. Last morning in Kaziranga.
• 07:30Breakfast. Check out of Vaani Greens.
• 08:00Drive to Guwahati Airport (230 km, 5 hrs). Stop for lunch en route at Jakhalabandha or Nagaon.
• 13:30Arrive Guwahati Airport. Trip ends. Catch afternoon/evening flight home.

PARK SEASON: Kaziranga is OPEN November 1 – April 30. CLOSED May – October (monsoon flooding). Book safaris during Nov-March for best sightings.

GETTING THERE: Fly to Guwahati (GAU) - Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Direct flights from Delhi (2.5 hrs), Kolkata (1.5 hrs), Mumbai (3.5 hrs), Bangalore (3.5 hrs). Guwahati to Kaziranga is 5 hours by road (NH37).

SAFARI BOOKING: Jeep safaris book out fast in peak season (Dec-Feb). We pre-book all safaris. Two types:

• Elephant safari: Dawn (5:30-6:30 AM), ₹1,200/person. Best for rhino close-ups - elephants can go where jeeps can't.
• Jeep safari: Morning (7:30-10 AM) or afternoon (2-4 PM), ₹3,000-5,000/jeep (max 6 pax). Covers more ground.

RANGES: Kaziranga has 4 ranges:

• Central (Kohora): Most popular, highest rhino density. Start here.
• Western (Bagori): Best for close wildlife sightings, less crowded.
• Eastern (Agartoli): Remote, good for birdwatching and wild buffalo herds.
• Burapahar: Hilly, for experienced wildlife watchers.

WHAT TO PACK: Neutral/olive clothing (no bright colours - animals startle). Binoculars, camera with zoom lens, sunscreen, hat, insect repellent. Mornings are cold (10-15°C Nov-Feb) - carry a fleece.

FOOD: Assamese cuisine is distinctive - masor tenga (sour fish curry), khar (alkaline banana preparation), pitha (rice cakes), duck curry, bamboo shoot dishes. Vaani Greens serves excellent multi-cuisine meals. Try a Brahmaputra river fish thali in Guwahati.

WILDLIFE: One-horned Indian rhinoceros (97% chance of sighting), Asian elephant, wild water buffalo, swamp deer (barasingha), hoolock gibbon, Bengal tiger (rare but present), 500+ bird species (including adjutant storks, pelicans, eagles).

PERMITS: No special permits needed for Indian nationals. Foreign nationals need no extra permits (unlike Arunachal). Just carry ID proof for park entry.

TEA ESTATES: Assam produces 50% of India's tea. The tea gardens around Kaziranga are stunning - rolling green fields, shade trees, pluckers in colourful saris. Vaani Greens is set inside a working tea estate.

MOBILE/ATM: Good Jio/Airtel coverage in Kaziranga area. ATMs in Kohora town (2 km from park gate). UPI works at most hotels and restaurants.
