“Very crowded place. Most of the times covered with cloud. You should be lucky enough to get the view of the falls together.”
Cherrapunji, or Sohra as it's known locally, is the entry point to some of Meghalaya’s most photographed landscapes. The living root bridges are a worth seeing. The famous double-decker bridge in Nongriat is a challenging but rewarding trek down 3,500 steps into the valley. Closer to the home, you can explore the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves, ancient limestone formations that are well-lit for visitors.
A day trip to Dawki takes you to the Umngot river on the Bangladesh border. Between January and March, the water runs so clear it looks like boats are floating on air. Nearby is Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, with its own single-decker root bridge and a bamboo sky walk offering views over the plains of Bangladesh. And of course, there is Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, a short drive from the home.
By Air: The most common airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 100km from Shillong. From there, it’s a 3-hour taxi ride to Shillong, and another 2 hours to Cherrapunji. A smaller airport is at Umroi, near Shillong (SHL), with limited flights mostly from Kolkata.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, which is well-connected to the rest of India. There is no rail network in Meghalaya. From the station, you can hire a taxi for the 5-hour journey to Cherrapunji.
By Road: Shillong is the main hub for travel within Meghalaya. Cherrapunji (Sohra) is 53km from Shillong, a winding 2-hour drive through the hills.
The best season to visit is from October to April, when the weather is dry and the skies are generally clear. This is the ideal time for trekking and caving. The monsoon, from June to September, is a different experience altogether. Cherrapunji receives over 10,000mm of rain, turning the entire landscape a brilliant, intense green. Waterfalls are at their most powerful, but some caves and trails may be closed.
