The five cottages stand in a line, facing a green hill. Each is a private A-frame space, built with dark wood and topped with a shingled roof and a skylight to let in the mountain sun. A stone path connects them, with small plants and river stones at the base of each deck. Inside, the layout is simple. A large king bed takes up most of the room, with a closet for storage and a small side table. The property has five bedrooms in total, one in each cottage. There is one shared bathroom facility for all guests, which is kept clean and has a geyser for hot water. The real draw is the land around the homes. There is outdoor seating for morning tea, and the air is clear. The kitchen, run by head chef Wahandan, is a highlight for many who stay. As one guest, Biplob Sharma, put it, "There’s a guy named Wahandan, the head chef of the resort, who was incredibly helpful throughout our stay." Another guest, Nilesh Kumbhar, confirms, "The food here is delicious and staff is friendly and helpful." A short, five-minute trek from the property leads to a small waterfall - a quiet spot to spend an afternoon.

We booked the whole place for 10 people as each cottage is sufficient for 2 people room, space is mostly consumed by the large bed and a closet thought. The home is a good starting point for exploring the Khasi Hills. The living root bridges are a worth seeing, particularly the famous double-decker bridge in Nongriat. Be prepared for the descent - it's a walk of about 3,500 steps down into the valley.

Closer to Cherrapunji (Sohra), you can explore the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves. These limestone cave systems are well-lit and accessible, offering a look at the region's unique geology.

The Umngot river in Dawki, near the Bangladesh border, is famous for its clear water. The riverbed is visible from the boat, making it feel like you're floating on glass. The best time for this is from January to March, before the monsoon rains.

About two hours away is Mawlynnong, known as Asia's cleanest village. You can walk through its clean lanes and climb the Riwai sky walk, a bamboo structure offering views over the plains of Bangladesh. Not far from there is Nohkalikai Falls, India’s tallest plunge waterfall at 340 meters.

Getting there.

By Air: The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (SHL) in Umroi, about 30km from Shillong city, but it has limited connectivity. The more common arrival point is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, which is about 100km (a 3-hour drive) from Shillong. From Shillong, it's another 2-hour drive to the Cherrapunji area.

By Rail: Meghalaya has no rail lines. The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, Assam (100km from Shillong). From the station, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Shillong and then onward.

By Road: Shillong is the central road hub for the region. The drive from Shillong to Cherrapunji (Sohra) is 53km and takes about two hours on a scenic but very winding road.

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit the Khasi Hills is from October to April. The weather is dry and pleasant, the skies are mostly clear, and all attractions are open. The winter months can be cold, and photos show frost on the ground in the early mornings, so pack warm layers.

The monsoon season, from June to September, is intense. The region receives some of the highest rainfall in the world, turning everything a deep, lush green. While beautiful, the rain can cause some waterfalls and caves to close for safety.
