The home is a good starting point for exploring the Khasi Hills. The living root bridges are a worth seeing, particularly the famous double-decker bridge in Nongriat, which is reached by a descent of about 3,500 steps. It’s a challenging but rewarding trek.
Near Cherrapunji (Sohra), you can explore the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves. These limestone caves are well-lit and accessible for most visitors, offering a glimpse into the region's unique geology.
A drive towards the Bangladesh border takes you to Dawki and the Umngot river. Between January and March, the water is famously clear, and you can see the riverbed from your boat.
Nearby, Mawlynnong is known as Asia's cleanest village. You can walk through its neat lanes and climb the Riwai sky walk, a bamboo viewpoint offering views over the plains of Bangladesh.
Don't miss Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres. The viewpoint gives a direct, powerful view of the cascade, especially just after the monsoon.
By air: The nearest major airport is in Guwahati (GAU), about 100km from Shillong. It’s a 3-hour drive from the airport to Shillong. A smaller airport is at Umroi, near Shillong (SHL), about 30km from the city, with limited flights, mostly from Kolkata.
By rail: The nearest railway station is in Guwahati. There is no rail connectivity to Meghalaya itself. From the station, you can hire a taxi to Shillong.
By road: Shillong is the main hub for the region. From Shillong, it’s a 53km, 2-hour drive on a winding road to Cherrapunji (Sohra). The home is in this area. Dawki is about 95km from Shillong.
The best season to visit the Khasi Hills is from October to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant. The skies are clear, and all attractions are accessible. The monsoon, from June to September, is intense, with over 10,000mm of rainfall. While some caves and waterfalls may close, this is when the landscape is at its most green and dramatic.
