The first thing you notice is the quiet. The home sits in its own garden, surrounded by lush greenery, with the mountains always in view. The rooms are simple and clean, with wood-panelled walls and windows that look out onto the garden. Some rooms are larger, able to accommodate up to four guests with a mix of king, twin, and single beds. Each bedroom has its own attached bathroom. The real heart of the home is the kitchen. The host, Ukeela, prepares every meal herself. Most of what you eat is grown just steps away. Guests talk about helping with a bit of garden work, or picking fresh guavas and oranges from the trees. Depending on the season, there are pomelos, avocados, and even homemade kiwi wine to taste. The food is local, Sikkimese, and made with care. Things to do nearby.

Rinchenpong is a good base for exploring West Sikkim. A drive of a few hours takes you to Pelling, known for its direct views of the Kanchenjunga range. Here you can visit two of Sikkim’s oldest monasteries, Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling.

Gangtok, the state capital, is the hub for arranging permits and transport for other parts of the state. From there, you can plan a day trip to Tsomgo Lake, which often freezes in winter, or visit Rumtek Monastery, an important centre for Tibetan Buddhism. A permit is required for Tsomgo Lake.

For a longer excursion, a trip to North Sikkim and the Yumthang valley requires a separate permit, usually arranged in Gangtok. It's known as the valley of flowers for its wildflowers in spring. For serious trekkers, the classic Goecha La trek starts from Yuksom, offering some of the closest ground views of Kanchenjunga.

Logistics

Getting there.

The nearest major airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, about a 4-5 hour drive away. This is the most reliable airport for the region. Pakyong Airport (PYG) is closer, near Gangtok, but flights are often diverted due to weather.

The closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located next to Bagdogra. From NJP, you will need to hire a car for the journey into Sikkim. Taxis can be booked from the airport or station for the full trip to Rinchenpong.

Best time to visit.

The best months to visit are from March to May, when the rhododendrons are in bloom, and from October to mid-December, when the skies are clearest for mountain views. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain and can cause road closures.
