Things to do nearby.
The centre of Shillong is a short drive away. Start at Ward's Lake, a 19th-century landmark where you can hire a paddle boat or just walk the garden paths. A few kilometres away is the Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures, with seven floors dedicated to the tribes of Northeast India. For a quick trip out of town, Elephant Falls is a three-tier waterfall just 12km away.
For longer drives, the Laitlum Canyons offer dramatic ridge views about 25km east of the city. To the southwest is the Mawphlang Sacred Grove, a dense Khasi forest best explored with a local guide who can share its history. The roads to Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Dawki are day trips in themselves, winding through the hills to the land of waterfalls and clear rivers.

Best time to visit.
The clearest skies are from October to April. The air is crisp and the views across the valleys are sharp. This is the best time for trekking and sightseeing. The monsoon arrives in June and lasts through September, bringing the heavy rains the region is famous for. The landscape turns a deep green, and the waterfalls are at their fullest, but some roads can be affected.
