The home is a good starting point for exploring Shillong and the Khasi Hills. In the city, Ward's Lake is a 19th-century landmark with paddle boats and a walking path lined with rhododendrons. A short drive away in Mawlai, the Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures has seven floors dedicated to the tribes of Northeast India.
For day trips, you'll need a car. Elephant Falls, a three-tiered waterfall, is an easy half-day trip just 12km from town. On a clear day, drive up to Shillong Peak, the highest point in the area at 1,965 metres, for views across the valley. For more dramatic landscapes, Laitlum Canyons are 25km east, offering ridge views that feel like the 'end of the hills'. About 25km southwest is the Mawphlang Sacred Grove, a dense, protected Khasi forest best explored with a local guide who can share its stories.
By Air: The main airport for the region is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), 100km away. The drive to Shillong takes about 3 hours on NH6. Shillong also has a smaller airport at Umroi (SHL), 30km away, with limited flights, mostly from Kolkata.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati (100km). There is no rail connectivity in Meghalaya. From the station, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Shillong.
By Road: Shillong is well-connected by road. The home is a short taxi ride from Police Bazar, the city's central hub. For visiting Cherrapunji (53km) or Dawki (95km), it's best to hire a car for the day.
October to April is the best season for clear skies and pleasant weather, ideal for sightseeing and getting uninterrupted views from places like Shillong Peak and Laitlum Canyons. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings the famous Khasi rain. The landscape turns a lush, deep green, but some outlying sights may be closed, and views can be obscured by mist. Shillong itself remains mostly accessible.
