The home is a starting point for exploring the vast landscapes of Ladakh. Leh town, with its markets, hospital, and permit offices, is a short drive away.
Pangong Tso, the iconic high-altitude blue lake on the border with China, is a day trip away (160km). The journey itself is spectacular, crossing high passes. An Inner Line Permit is required.
Nubra Valley is reached via Khardung La, one of the world's highest motorable passes. The valley is famous for its high-altitude sand dunes at Hunder and the double-humped Bactrian camels.
Tso Moriri is a quieter, more remote lake (220km) known for its incredible birdlife, including the rare brown-headed gull. It’s a protected wetland reserve.
For shorter trips, a half-day loop east from Leh along the Indus River takes you to the historic monasteries of Hemis and Thiksey. A half-day loop west covers Magnetic Hill, the Zanskar-Indus sangam (confluence), and the historic Gurudwara Pathar Sahib.
By Air: The nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh. Flights operate only in the morning due to mountain weather, and diversions are common. The home is a short drive from the airport.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Jammu Tawi, approximately 700km away. From Jammu, it is a two-day road journey to Leh via Srinagar. There is no rail connectivity to Ladakh.
By Road: Leh is the region's main road hub. The Leh-Manali highway (470km) is open from June to mid-October. The Leh-Srinagar highway (420km) is open from around April to late November. Kargil is the main town halfway to Srinagar (220km from Leh).
The best time to visit Ladakh is from June to September. During these months, the high passes are clear of snow, the skies are a deep blue, and the days are warm enough for exploring. By mid-October, the Leh-Manali highway closes due to snowfall at Baralacha La, followed by the Leh-Srinagar road closing at Zoji La in late November as winter sets in.
