Drive towards the high-altitude meadows of Auli, known for its oak and rhododendron forests. In winter, from December to March, it becomes one of India’s premier ski destinations.

For trekkers, the region is the gateway to serious climbs. The base for the trek to Tungnath, the world’s highest Shiva temple, and onward to the Chandrashila summit, is at Chopta, about 220 km from the transport hub of Haridwar.

For a spiritual and adventure-filled stop, Rishikesh sits on the banks of the Ganga. It's a global hub for yoga and the starting point for river rafting. Every evening, you can witness the Ganga Aarti ceremony at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan.

The closest transport hubs depend on whether you are approaching from the Kumaon or Garhwal side of the state.

By Air: The two main airports are Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun for access to the Garhwal region (Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Chopta) and Pantnagar Airport (PGH) for the Kumaon region (Nainital, Mukteshwar, Almora). From either airport, you will need to hire a taxi for the final mountain journey.

By Rail: The main railhead for Kumaon is Kathgodam, with connections from major cities like Delhi. For Garhwal, the primary railhead is Haridwar. Taxis are readily available at both stations for onward travel.

Best time to visit.

The mountains are accessible year-round, but different seasons offer different sights. The clearest views of the snow peaks are typically from March to June and again from September to November.

The monsoon months of July and August bring lush green landscapes but also the risk of landslides and road blockages. High-altitude destinations like Auli and Chopta often become inaccessible due to heavy snowfall from late December to February.
