Tiger Hill sunrise is an 11-kilometre drive from Darjeeling. On a clear morning, you can see the first light hit the peak of Kanchenjunga. It's a popular spot, so an early start is necessary to find a good viewpoint.
Happy Valley and Glenburn are two working tea estates where you can see the process from leaf to cup. You can walk through the gardens, watch the tea-pickers at work, and finish with a tasting session.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a two-hour 'joyride' on the toy train. The most popular route is the Ghum loop, which offers scenic views of the town and surrounding hills.
For serious trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek to Sandakphu is a multi-day journey. The reward is a rare panoramic view of five of the world's highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru.
Back in town, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is known for its conservation programs for the red panda and snow leopard. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), founded by Tenzing Norgay after his Everest ascent.
Getting there.
By air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), around 90 kilometres away. The drive to Darjeeling takes about 3 hours via the scenic routes of Mirik or Kurseong.
By rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead for the region, located 88 kilometres from Darjeeling. It connects the hills to major Indian cities. From NJP, you can hire a taxi or take a shared jeep. The historic toy train also runs from NJP to Darjeeling, but it's a slow, scenic journey, not a quick transfer.
By road: Siliguri, 75 kilometres away, is the main road hub in the plains. From here, frequent shared jeeps and private taxis make the winding journey up to Darjeeling and other hill towns like Kalimpong and Mirik.
Best time to visit.
The best time to visit is from October to mid-June. The post-monsoon months of October and November offer crisp air and clear mountain views. Spring, from March to May, brings pleasant weather and blooming rhododendrons. The monsoon season, from late June to September, is best avoided. Heavy rains can cause landslides, leading to road closures on NH10 and the Pankhabari road, which can disrupt travel plans.
