The home is a good starting point for exploring the Kullu valley and beyond. Manali, the main hub, is a drive away and acts as a gateway to the high-altitude deserts of Lahaul and Spiti.
From the Manali side, you can drive to Solang Valley for its meadows and adventure sports. The 9km-long Atal Tunnel is an experience in itself, connecting the Kullu Valley with Lahaul and keeping the route open for most of the year. In Manali town, you can visit the ancient Hadimba Devi temple, built around a cave, or explore the cafes of Old Manali and the hot springs at Vashisht.
For trekkers, the 4-hour walk to Triund from McLeodganj offers a direct, wall-like view of the Dhauladhar mountain range. McLeodganj itself is the centre of the Tibetan community in exile, home to the Tsuglagkhang complex and the Dalai Lama's residence.
The world-renowned paragliding site at Bir-Billing is also within driving distance, with October and November being the peak season for flying. For a much longer expedition, the Spiti loop via the Atal Tunnel is accessible from June to October, taking you through Kaza, Ki Monastery, and some of the highest villages in the world.
By Air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar (KUU) in Kullu, which serves the Manali region. Flights can be limited and weather-dependent. Chandigarh (IXC) is the most reliable all-weather airport in the plains, with better connectivity, from where you can hire a taxi for the drive up.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Chandigarh (CDG). From there, it's a multi-hour drive into the mountains. For a more scenic, albeit slower, journey into the Shimla region, the UNESCO heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train is an option. Pathankot (PTK) is the primary railhead for accessing the Dharamshala and McLeodganj side of the state.
By Road: The home is accessible by road. Himachal's mountain roads are winding and often single-lane. Expect driving times of 4-6 hours for every 100km. Manali and Dharamshala are the main road hubs in this part of the state.
The best time to visit is during two main windows. The first is from March to June, when the snow melts and the valleys turn green for summer. The second is from September to November, after the monsoon, when the skies are clear and the air is crisp. The monsoon months of July and August can bring heavy rain and landslides on National Highways 3 and 21. From December to February, the upper reaches of Manali, Shimla, and Dharamshala receive heavy snowfall, which can restrict travel.
