A look around
What's here
The path to the home is a flight of about 25 stone steps cut into the hillside. It opens up to a terraced garden and a collection of stone and wood buildings looking out at the mountains. The air is thin and quiet up here. The home has 16 rooms, each with its own bathroom and a king-sized bed. The walls are panelled with warm wood, and the windows look out onto the valley and surrounding peaks. The layout is simple and open, so the rooms feel spacious. For groups, the property can accommodate up to 32 guests across its rooms. The kitchen is a real highlight for visitors. Meals are not from a buffet, they are prepared fresh when you order. This can take a little time, but it’s worth the wait. Guests often sit by the fireplace while the cooks chop vegetables for dinner. The menu has plenty of vegetarian options. As one guest, Ramesh Singh, put it, "hot chapatis and chicken curry in a place like lachen in winter weather wins my vote hands down." The team is led by Mr. Kumar Sharma, and guests consistently note how helpful they are. Another visitor said they have "very humble and polite staff, always eager to serve you."

“Excellent service and staff, you will have to climb some stairs to reach the reception but it's totally worth. Very humble and polite staff, always eager to serve you. The property is small however you won't find any cramped spaces as the layout is brilliant inside guest rooms and common spaces as well. Among many shining stars the food is definitely a highl...”

“We stopped by the property for lunch and the meal did not disappoint. Since the food is prepared fresh as you order, including the chopping of vegetables and making of momos, it takes a while for the order to come. While we were waiting the kids enjoyed staying warm by the fireplace while the adults enjoyed the window side views. There is however no proper ...”

“The hotel staff are very very cordial and helpful. They are one call away for any kind of requirements. Especially Mr Kumar Sharma was down to earth in handling the guest. His team of front office executives, Room Boys and the restaurant staff were best in hospitality. Loved their commitment. I wish them all the best”

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

Lachen is the starting point for trips into the higher reaches of North Sikkim. The main destination from here is Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, but this requires a separate permit and acclimatisation.

The most popular circuit includes the Yumthang Valley, known as Sikkim's valley of flowers. It's a beautiful drive from Lachen, especially from March to May when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. You will need to arrange a vehicle and permits in advance, which can be done from Gangtok.

Logistics

Getting there.

The most reliable way to reach Sikkim is by air to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, which is about a 4-5 hour drive from the state capital, Gangtok. From Gangtok, Lachen is another long drive, typically taking 4-6 hours depending on road conditions. The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), also in West Bengal, with similar driving times.

Pakyong Airport (PYG) is in Sikkim and closer to Gangtok, but flights are infrequent and often cancelled or diverted due to weather. We recommend booking travel via Bagdogra for a more predictable journey.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time for clear mountain views is from October to mid-December. The skies are crisp and blue after the monsoon. Spring, from March to May, is when the rhododendrons and other wildflowers bloom across the state, especially in the Yumthang Valley near Lachen.

The monsoon season, from June to September, sees heavy rain and frequent landslides, which can close roads for days. Winter brings heavy snow to Lachen, sometimes blocking access, but offering a completely different landscape.
