A look around
What's here
The first thing you feel in Lachen's cold air is the warmth from the kitchen. Your hosts, Tenzing and Dhatup, welcome you in with a hot cup of tea. The kitchen is the heart of this home, where a traditional wood-fired hearth, the *bukhari*, keeps the room warm and guests stay for hours, talking. As one guest said, "It is here that we experienced the real Sikkim...the people n culture!" The home has four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The rooms are small, neat, and clean, with warm beds for the mountain nights. Hot water is available in the bathrooms, and the hosts also provide it in flasks. It's a simple setup, designed for rest after a day of travel. Meals are a reflection of the hosts' care. The food is simple, home-cooked, and served hot. You might have rajma chawal, aloo curry, and dishes made with local vegetables. Many evenings are spent sharing these meals with Tenzing, Dhatup, and their son, Thutob, listening to their stories. If you have an early start the next day, they will wake up to pack you sandwiches and apples for the journey. It’s a place built on small, kind gestures. As a guest wrote, "By the time we left, it felt like we were saying goodbye to family, not hosts."

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

Lachen is a gateway to North Sikkim's high-altitude landscapes. The drive to Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest in the world, starts from here. The journey is long and requires an early start, but the views are worth the effort.

Yumthang Valley, known as the valley of flowers, is another popular trip from this region, typically via Lachung. It blooms with rhododendrons and other alpine flowers from late February to mid-June. A permit, arranged in Gangtok, is required to visit.

For those interested in local life, a walk through Lachen village itself offers a look at its monastery and the quiet rhythm of a remote mountain community. Dathup can sometimes suggest short hikes in the nearby forests.

Logistics

Getting there.

The most reliable way to reach Sikkim is by air to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, about a 4-5 hour drive from Gangtok. From Gangtok, Lachen is another 4-6 hour drive, depending on road conditions. The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), which is close to Bagdogra.

Sikkim has its own airport in Pakyong (PYG), closer to Gangtok, but flights are limited and often diverted to Bagdogra due to weather. It is best to hire a dedicated vehicle for the journey from the airport or railway station to Lachen, as public transport is infrequent.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time for clear skies and mountain views is from October to mid-December. Spring, from March to May, is when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the state, including in the areas around Lachen.

The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain and frequent landslides, which can cause road closures and travel disruptions. North Sikkim roads are often shut down during this period.
