The walk to the home is a short climb up through Kalga village. You leave the road behind at Barshaini. The air gets quieter. The home is a traditional two-story structure of stone and wood, with a long timber-post balcony looking out at the valley. The view stretches across pine forests to the mountains. Inside, the home has eight bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The rooms are simple and clean, with stone walls, wooden floors and ceilings, and a traditional tandoor to keep things warm on cold nights. The beds are king-sized. This is not a hotel, it's a family home, and the feel is rustic and warm. As one guest, Chandana, put it, "I loved the whole rustic and antique touch to the interiors with a tandoor in the rooms and a swing upstairs." The hosts are Raja Ji, Maitri, and their daughter Vaishnavi. They live here and share their space with guests. The food is a big part of the stay. Kiren cooks fresh, simple meals, often a nightly thali with dal, rajma, and chicken. It’s the kind of food that makes you feel looked after. Things to do nearby.

Kalga itself is the main draw, a small village of apple orchards and traditional homes set in the Parvati Valley. The best thing to do is walk. There are several trails leading directly from the village. You can take a short walk to the nearby villages of Pulga and Tulga. For more serious trekkers, Kalga is a starting point for the Bunbuni Pass, Kheer Ganga, and Sar Pass treks. These are multi-day hikes and are best done with a local guide.

The larger town of Kasol is a short drive from Barshaini, the nearest roadhead. Manali is a few hours away by car, and a possible day trip if you start early. There, you can visit the Hadimba Devi temple, the hot springs at Vashisht, or drive up towards Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel, which connects the Kullu Valley to Lahaul.

Getting there.

The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, about a 2-hour drive to Barshaini, the last motorable point. Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) is a more reliable option with better connectivity, but is a much longer 8-10 hour drive away.

The closest major railway stations are in Pathankot and Chandigarh. From either station, you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus for the multi-hour journey into the Parvati Valley.

From towns like Kasol or Bhuntar, you can find local buses or taxis to Barshaini. From the Barshaini dam, Kalga village is a 20-30 minute uphill walk. Porters are usually available at the base to help with luggage.

Best time to visit.

The best months to visit are from March to June, when the weather is pleasant and the snow from winter has melted. A second window of clear skies opens up from September to November, after the monsoon has passed. This is a great time for trekking and for sharp mountain views.

The monsoon season, July and August, sees heavy rain and can cause landslides on the approach roads. Winter, from December to February, brings heavy snowfall. The village is often covered in a thick white blanket, which is beautiful, but be prepared for cold temperatures and potential road closures.
