Things to do nearby.
The home is a good point from which to explore the wider Himachal region, though most destinations will be a full day's trip.
To the north, the Kullu valley is home to Manali, a hub for travellers. From there, you can visit the Solang valley for adventure sports or drive through the Atal Tunnel to explore Lahaul. The Hadimba Devi temple and the hot springs at Vashisht are also in the Manali area.
To the west is the Kangra valley. Here you’ll find Dharamshala and McLeodganj, the residence of the Dalai Lama and the heart of the Tibetan community in exile. The Tsuglagkhang complex is the main monastery. For walkers, the four-hour Triund trek offers a direct view of the Dhauladhar mountain range. Nearby, Bir is one of the world's best sites for paragliding, with the peak season running from October to November.
Getting there.
The most reliable airport for reaching Himachal is Chandigarh (IXC), which is well-connected to major Indian cities. From there, it is a multi-hour drive into the mountains. Smaller airports exist within the hills at Bhuntar (KUU) for the Kullu-Manali area and Dharamshala (DHM), but flights are less frequent and can be affected by weather.
The nearest major railhead is also in Chandigarh. For a more scenic journey to the Shimla side of the state, the Kalka-Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a slow but memorable option. Pathankot is the main railhead for accessing the Dharamshala and Kangra region.
From any airport or station, you will need to hire a taxi for the final leg of the journey.
Best time to visit.
The clearest weather is from March to June, as the snow melts and summer arrives, and again from September to November, after the monsoon has passed. These months offer pleasant temperatures and clear mountain views.
The monsoon season, from July to August, brings heavy rain and the risk of landslides, particularly on the main national highways. Winter, from December to February, sees snowfall in the upper reaches of the state, which can be beautiful but may also lead to road closures.
