Manali is a hub for the Kullu valley and a gateway to the high-altitude deserts of Lahaul and Spiti.
Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel: A short drive from Manali, Solang is known for adventure sports. The 9km-long Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang Pass provides year-round access to the Lahaul valley, a landscape that was previously cut off for six months of the year by snow.
Old Manali and Local Temples: Explore the cafes and quiet lanes of Old Manali, a world away from the bustle of Mall Road. Visit the 16th-century Hadimba Devi temple, built around a cave and surrounded by a cedar forest. A short walk away are the Vashisht hot springs, with public and private baths.
The Spiti Valley Loop: For the more adventurous, Manali is the starting point for the road trip into Spiti Valley. This high-altitude circuit, open from June to October, takes you through remote villages like Kaza and Kibber, and past ancient monasteries like Ki. The full loop requires several days and a permit for certain sections.
By Air: The nearest airport is in Bhuntar (KUU), about 50km from Manali. Flights are limited and weather-dependent. The most reliable major airport is Chandigarh (IXC), a 280km drive away (approx. 8-9 hours).
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh (CDG). From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Manali. The scenic Kalka-Shimla toy train (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is an option if your journey takes you through Shimla.
By Road: Manali is well-connected by road from Delhi and Chandigarh. The drive through the hills is scenic but can be slow. State-run and private buses run overnight services from both cities.
The best seasons are spring and summer (March to June) when the snow melts and the valleys are green, and again in autumn (September to November) for clear skies and crisp mountain air. The monsoon months of July and August can bring heavy rain and landslides on the national highways. Winter (December to February) brings heavy snowfall, transforming Manali into a white landscape, which many visitors come specifically to see.
