“The Seven Sisters Waterfall in Cherrapunji is an absolutely amazing, quiet, and beautiful spot located in a charming little village. • The Most Important Tip: I highly recommend visiting this place only during the monsoon season. “Wow, what an incredible spot! 🤩 You absolutely HAVE to visit the Seven Sisters Waterfall, but seriously, only during the rainy season! 🌧️ That's when it truly comes alive and offers breathtaking views. The Khasi Hills are full of natural formations found nowhere else. A short drive takes you to the trailheads for some of the region's most well-known sights. The living root bridges are a worth seeing. The most famous, the double-decker bridge in Nongriat, is reached by a descent of 3,500 steps into the valley. Guides are recommended for this trek.
Closer to the home are the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves, ancient limestone formations that you can walk through. Some sections are lit, while others require a bit more adventure. For a different kind of water, drive to Dawki, on the border with Bangladesh. Here, the Umngot river runs so clear between January and March that boats seem to float on air.
Nearby, you can also visit Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, and walk on the Riwai sky walk, a bamboo bridge offering views over the canopy. And of course, there is Nohkalikai, India's tallest plunge waterfall, which drops 340 metres from a clifftop.

From the airport, it’s a 3-hour taxi ride to Shillong, and another 2 hours to Cherrapunji. A smaller airport exists at Umroi near Shillong (SHL), with limited flights mostly from Kolkata.
By rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati. From there, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Shillong. There is no rail network within Meghalaya.
By road: Shillong is the central road hub for the region. Cherrapunji (Sohra) is a 53km, 2-hour drive from Shillong on a winding but scenic road.
The Khasi Hills are a year-round destination, with each season offering a different experience. The main tourist season runs from October to April, when the weather is dry and the skies are clear, offering expansive views.
The monsoon, from June to September, is a spectacle in itself. The region receives over 10,000mm of rain, transforming the landscape into a vibrant, lush green. This is when the waterfalls, including the nearby Seven Sisters, are in their full, thunderous glory. While some caves and trails may close due to the heavy rain, the sheer force of nature is an incredible sight.
