The journey to this part of the Eastern Himalaya is long and requires planning.
By Air: The most reliable major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 480km from Tawang. From Guwahati, it’s a two-day drive to Tawang, with an overnight stop in Bomdila. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is closer but has fewer flights.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Rangapara North (RPAN), about 280km from the Tawang region. From there, you will need to hire a vehicle for the multi-day road journey.
By Road: The road journey is the main experience. You enter Arunachal from Assam at Bhalukpong, where Inner Line Permits are checked. Bomdila is the typical halfway point and overnight stop, about 165km before Tawang. The final leg involves crossing the high-altitude Sela Pass (4,170m).
The best season to travel through this region is from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. The high-altitude Sela Pass can close due to heavy snow anytime from December to February, cutting off road access to Tawang. For those interested in the Ziro Music Festival, September is the month to visit Ziro Valley.
