Tawang Monastery sits 320 kilometers up the valley past Sela Pass. Founded in the seventeenth century, Galden Namgey Lhatse is the largest Tibetan monastery in India, housing ancient scriptures and quiet courtyards overlooking high ridges. Plan a two-day trip from Dirang to visit properly.
Sela Pass and Sela Lake sit at an altitude of 4,170 meters along the highway toward Tawang. The pass remains open most of the year except during heavy snowfall in deep winter, offering views of ice-crusted lake waters and mountain prayer flags. Bring heavy woolens even in summer months.
Madhuri Lake, officially named Sangetsar Tso, lies 45 kilometers beyond Tawang town near the northern border. Formed by an earthquake, the lake features dead pine trees standing upright out of clear water. Drivers require local taxi arrangements from Tawang to reach the shore.
Bumla Pass rests 37 kilometers north of Tawang at the Line of Actual Control. Visiting requires a special civilian permit arranged in advance through local authorities in Tawang. The high border outpost provides views across the plateau.

Getting there.
Guwahati (GAU) at 480 kilometers is the primary arrival airport with direct flights from major Indian cities. From Guwahati, travelers arrange a private vehicle or shared sumo taxi for the overland journey into the hills.
Tezpur (TEZ) is the closest functional airport at 320 kilometers, though flights are limited. Most overland journeys pause at Tezpur or Assam border towns before beginning the mountain climb.
Rangapara North at 280 kilometers serves as the nearest railhead for travelers arriving by train through Assam. Shared vehicles connect the station to the foothills.
Bhalukpong acts as the entry gateway into Arunachal Pradesh along the Assam border. All travelers must stop at the checkpost here to verify their Inner Line Permits before proceeding into the valley.
Bomdila sits 165 kilometers from the entry checkpost and serves as the standard overnight stopping point along the climb to Dirang and Tawang.
Best time to visit.
March through October brings moderate temperatures, green valley floors, and open mountain passes across western Arunachal Pradesh. Spring months of March and April bring clear morning skies and blooming orchids along the lower slopes. October offers stable post-monsoon weather with clear views across the Dirang valley. Sela Pass frequently closes due to heavy snow between December and February, while Ziro Valley is best in September during its annual music festival.
