A look around
What's here
The drive ends in the quiet of Mawsynram, one of the wettest places on earth. The home is a simple, single-storey building with a small lawn and a covered veranda where you can sit and watch the clouds roll in. It is, as one guest wrote, a place "away from the City hustle bustle, a serene & beautiful property perfectly situated in between lush nature." Inside, the home is big, spacious, and uncluttered. Four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, provide a simple and clean base for up to eight people. Some rooms are straightforward, with wooden bed frames and light from the windows. Others are larger, with low-slung beds, wood-panelled ceilings, and sliding glass doors that open onto a small balcony. It's a place for a slow-paced trip, a base for a family or a group of friends exploring the Khasi Hills. It’s a place for those who, like a past guest, are simply looking for "a lot of greenery and peace here."

“We stayed at KIVA Homestay, Nongstoin last week with our son and elderly parents, and it truly felt like a home away from home. The owner’s warmth, kindness, and child-friendly nature made our stay incredibly comfortable. They were equally caring towards our elderly parents, which meant a lot to us. The food was simple, homely, and delicious—cooked with so m...”

“A recommendable homestay located in the lap of West Khasi Hills in Nongstoin Town. Rooms are very clean. Food was very delicious and they even arranged Jain Food. They even arranged early morning breakfast before their schedule. Hospitality of the people was the best part. It truly justifies the term Homestay 🏠 giving the feeling of Home.”

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

The Khasi & Jaintia Hills are a landscape of deep gorges, living architecture, and underground rivers. Mawsynram is a good starting point for some of its most well-known sights.

The living root bridges are a worth seeing. The most famous, the double-decker bridge in Nongriat, is a challenging but rewarding trek involving a descent of over 3,500 steps. It’s a full-day trip.

This region is cave country. The Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves near Cherrapunji (Sohra) offer a glimpse into the limestone formations underground. Mawsmai is well-lit and accessible for most visitors, while others require a guide and a bit more adventure.

Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, is a powerful sight, especially during or just after the monsoon. It's located near Cherrapunji, about a two-hour drive away.

The village of Mawlynnong, once named Asia's cleanest village, is a unique community-led initiative. Nearby, the Riwai sky walk offers views over the plains of Bangladesh from a bamboo platform.

Further afield is the Umngot river at Dawki, on the border with Bangladesh. Between January and March, the water runs so clear it looks like boats are floating on air.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit for clear skies and pleasant weather is from October to April. This is the ideal season for trekking to the root bridges and exploring caves.

The monsoon, from June to September, is a different experience altogether. Mawsynram receives over 10,000mm of rain, transforming the landscape into an intensely green, mist-covered world. While some caves and trails may close due to the water levels, the waterfalls are at their most spectacular.
