The home is a good starting point for the region's main sights. The famous living root bridges are a worth seeing. The Nongriat double-decker bridge is the most well-known, reached by a steep descent of 3,500 steps. Sanmi, one of the hosts, can sometimes guide guests on the trek.
Near Cherrapunji (Sohra), you can explore the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves. These limestone caves are well-lit and accessible for most visitors, offering a glimpse into the underground world of the Khasi Hills.
A drive away is the Umngot river at Dawki, on the border with Bangladesh. Between January and March, the water is famously clear, and you can see the riverbed from your boat.
Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, is a unique community initiative worth visiting. Nearby, the Riwai sky walk offers views over the plains of Bangladesh from a bamboo bridge.
India's tallest plunge waterfall, Nohkalikai Falls, is also close. It drops 340 metres from a clifftop and is most powerful during the monsoon.
The standard arrival point is Guwahati, which has the nearest major airport and railhead.
By air: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati is 100km from Shillong and the most common entry point. The drive to Shillong takes about 3 hours. A smaller airport, Shillong Airport (SHL) at Umroi, is 30km from the city but has limited flights, mostly connecting through Kolkata.
By rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, 100km from Shillong. There is no rail network within Meghalaya itself.
By road: Shillong is the state capital and the main hub for travel to Cherrapunji (53km, 2-hour drive), Dawki (95km), and Mawlynnong. Taxis and shared cabs are available from Shillong and Guwahati to reach Cherrapunji.
The best season to visit the Khasi and Jaintia Hills is from October to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant. This is the ideal time for trekking to the root bridges and boating on the Umngot river.
The monsoon, from June to September, is intense. Cherrapunji receives over 10,000mm of rain, and some waterfalls and caves may be closed. However, the landscape turns an unmatched, vivid green, and the waterfalls are at their most powerful.
