Aritar is a small town in East Sikkim, away from the main tourist trails. The main draw is the lake and the quiet. You can go boating on Lampokhari lake, which is just a short walk away. A nearby zipline offers a bit of adventure. A walk up to Mankhim viewpoint gives you a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range, especially at sunrise. The Aritar Gumpa is a small, peaceful Buddhist monastery worth a visit for its traditional architecture and quiet atmosphere.
By air: The nearest major airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, about a 4-5 hour drive away. Sikkim's own Pakyong Airport (PYG) is closer, but has very limited flight connectivity.
By rail: The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal, located next to Bagdogra airport. From NJP, you can hire a private taxi for the 4-5 hour drive to Aritar.
By road: Aritar is connected by road from Siliguri, Gangtok, and Kalimpong. The roads are winding and mountainous.
The best time for clear skies and mountain views is from October to May. The days are pleasant and the visibility is excellent for seeing Kanchenjunga. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain. The landscape becomes incredibly lush and green, but views can be obscured by clouds and travel may be affected by landslides.
