The road ends near the edge of Pangong Tso, at 4,250 metres. The air is thin, the quiet is deep. The home is a collection of 14 simple rooms, arranged around a central courtyard with a fire pit at its heart. The snow-capped mountains of the Changchenmo range are the backdrop. Each of the fourteen rooms is a private space with a king bed and an attached bathroom with a shower. The focus is on the essentials - a warm bed, clean linen, and a window that looks out onto the high-altitude landscape. The staff are from the area, and as one guest, Umar, noted, they are "warm, attentive, and always ready to help". The food is simple, hot, and welcome after a long day's drive. The real draw is what happens after sunset. The sky over Pangong is dark, free of city light. A guest, Sakshi Raisurana, remembers how the staff "were so sweet to arrange a sweet stargazing experience for me right outside my room with a cot too". Another guest recalls how at night, "our group sat together with hotel staffs around the fire, to looks stars in the sky, chilled with music". This home is a destination in itself, a place to experience Pangong Lake. You can walk along its shores, watch the water change from turquoise to deep blue, and spot migratory birds like the brown-headed gull.

For those travelling further, Pangong is a key stop on the Ladakh circuit. You can drive to the Nubra Valley via the remote Shyok road, a journey through a dramatic river valley. The sand dunes and double-humped Bactrian camels of Hunder are the main attraction there. Tso Moriri, another high-altitude lake, is a longer drive away but offers a quieter experience.

If you are on your way back to Leh, the monasteries of the Indus Valley are worth a stop. Hemis, the largest monastery in Ladakh, and Thiksey, with its impressive multi-storey statue of Maitreya Buddha, can be visited on a half-day loop from the capital.

Logistics

Getting there.

The only way to reach Pangong is by road. The nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport (IXL) in Leh, which receives morning flights from major Indian cities. Weather can be unpredictable, and flights are sometimes diverted.

From Leh, it is a 160 km drive that takes about 4-5 hours, crossing the Chang La pass at 5,360m. You will need to hire a local taxi or have your own vehicle. An Inner Line Permit is required to travel to Pangong, which must be arranged in Leh or online beforehand. The road is scenic but demanding.

Pangong can also be reached from Srinagar (a multi-day journey via Kargil and Leh) or Manali (a seasonal, multi-day journey via the high passes, open only from June to early October).

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Pangong Lake is during the short summer, from June to September. During these months, the days are sunny, the skies are clear, and the high passes are open and safe for travel. The lake is at its most vivid blue.

By October, temperatures drop sharply, and the Leh-Manali highway often closes by the middle of the month due to snowfall on the passes. The Leh-Srinagar road via Zoji La usually remains open until late November. Winter is harsh, with the lake freezing over completely.
