The home is a base for exploring the high-altitude desert of Ladakh. You will need an Inner Line Permit for many of these journeys, which can be arranged in Leh.
Pangong Tso, the high-altitude lake on the border with China, is a day trip away, about 160km from the main town of Leh. The colours of the water change through the day.
Nubra Valley is reached by crossing the Khardung La pass. The valley is known for the sand dunes at Hunder and the double-humped Bactrian camels that live there.
Tso Moriri is another high-altitude lake, about 220km from Leh. It is quieter than Pangong and a breeding ground for migratory birds like the brown-headed gull.
Closer to Leh, a half-day trip can cover the monasteries of the Indus valley, including the large complexes at Hemis and Thiksey. Another popular half-day loop to the west of Leh includes Magnetic Hill, the confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers, and the Gurudwara Pathar Sahib.
Getting there.
By Air: The nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport (IXL) in Leh. Flights operate mainly in the morning due to weather conditions in the mountains, and diversions are common.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Jammu Tawi, which is over 700km away. From there, you must travel by road via Srinagar and Kargil to reach Ladakh, a multi-day journey.
By Road: Leh is the main road hub. It is connected to Manali via the Leh-Manali Highway (470km), which is open from June to mid-October. The road from Srinagar to Leh (420km) via Zoji La pass is typically open from April to November. Kargil is about 220km from Leh and is the main town in the Suru Valley.
Best time to visit.
The best time to visit Ladakh is from June to September. During these summer months, the weather is clear, and the high mountain passes are open for road travel. From mid-October, snowfall can lead to road closures. The Leh-Manali highway usually closes by mid-October, and the Leh-Srinagar highway closes by the end of November.
