Pangong Tso sits 160km away across Chang La at an altitude of 4,250m. The high-altitude salt lake sits directly on the border, known for changing shades of blue throughout the day. Plan a full-day drive starting early in the morning, carry heavy winter layers even in July, and ensure your Inner Line Permit is stamped before leaving Leh.
Nubra Valley lies over Khardung La, reaching the high sand dunes of Hunder where double-humped Bactrian camels graze along the Shyok River bed. The drive requires a full day or an overnight stay in Diskit or Hunder, with cold wind blowing across the desert floor by late afternoon.
Tso Moriri rests 220km south at 4,522m, offering a far quieter alternative to Pangong. Brown-headed gulls and Tibetan wild asses inhabit the wetland shores. The journey takes six to seven hours over rough high-altitude tracks, requiring extra fuel and offline maps.
Hemis and Thiksey Monasteries form an easy half-day loop along the Indus Valley riverbank from the home. Thiksey rises in twelve tiers up a hilltop resembling the Potala Palace, best visited around 6am to hear morning prayers, while Hemis sits inside a side gorge further south.
Magnetic Hill, the Zanskar-Indus Sangam at Nimo, and Gurudwara Pathar Sahib sit along the highway west of Leh. This half-day circuit lets you stand at the confluence where the muddy Zanskar meets the clear green Indus River, ideal for an easy afternoon outing without steep altitude gains.
Getting there.
Leh Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport (IXL) is the primary entry point to Ladakh, situated about 10km from the home. Flights operate only during morning hours due to high mountain thermal winds. Weather diversions and flight delays are frequent, so keep your arrival day flexible.
Jammu Tawi is the nearest railway station, situated 700km away. Reaching Leh from Jammu requires a two-day overland road trip via Srinagar, Kargil, and Zoji La.
Leh town center serves as the main road and transport hub, offering vehicle permits, fuel stations, ATMs, and medical facilities. Kargil sits 220km west on the road to Srinagar, serving as the midpoint stop. Manali lies 470km south across high mountain passes including Baralacha La, accessible only between June and October. Srinagar sits 420km west via Sonamarg and Zoji La, open from April through November.
Best time to visit.
June through September brings clear skies, open mountain passes, and manageable daytime temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. This is the main travel season across the Trans-Himalaya when all high routes to Nubra, Pangong, and Manali remain snow-free.
October marks the sharp transition into deep autumn. Daylight hours shrink, evening temperatures drop below freezing, and road closures begin across Baralacha La and Rohtang. The Leh to Manali highway closes by mid-October, followed by the Leh to Srinagar route by late November.
