Bomdila is a key overnight stop on the circuit to Tawang. The journey onward is where the main sights of this region unfold.
Tawang Monastery - About 165 km from Bomdila, this is the largest monastery in India. Officially named Galden Namgey Lhatse, it's a 17th-century complex that feels like a city in itself, perched at 3,000 metres with commanding views.
Sela Pass & Sela Lake - You will cross this high-altitude pass (4,170m) on the way to Tawang. The pass is often windy and cold, and the beautiful Sela Lake by the roadside is typically frozen in winter. Prayer flags mark the summit.
Madhuri Lake - Officially Sangetsar Tso, this lake was formed by an earthquake. It's about 45 km from Tawang town and is famous for the skeletal tree trunks that emerge from its clear waters. It was nicknamed after the actress Madhuri Dixit, who filmed a song here.
Bumla Pass - This is the Indo-China border, a viewpoint at over 4,600 metres. It’s a 37km drive from Tawang and requires a separate permit, usually arranged a day in advance in Tawang. The journey itself is a dramatic drive.
Ziro Valley - A different circuit from the Tawang route, Ziro is the heartland of the Apatani people, known for their unique facial tattoos and sustainable paddy-and-fish cultivation. The valley is best visited in September for the Ziro Festival of Music.
By Air - The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 480km from Tawang. The drive from Guwahati to Bomdila takes a full day. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is closer but has fewer flight connections.
By Rail - The nearest major railhead is Rangapara North Railway Station (RPAN) in Assam, about 280km from the Tawang region. From there, you will need to hire a taxi for the multi-day road journey.
By Road - The journey into Arunachal is by road. Bhalukpong is the entry point from Assam where Inner Line Permits are checked. Bomdila is a common first-night halt, roughly an 8-10 hour drive from Guwahati. Tawang is another 8-10 hour drive from Bomdila, crossing the Sela Pass.
The best season to travel through this part of the Himalayas is from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. From December to February, heavy snowfall can close the Sela Pass, cutting off road access to Tawang. For a specific cultural experience, September is ideal for visiting Ziro Valley during its famous music festival.
