This home is a good point from which to explore the lower Himalayas. The old British-era town of Kasauli is a short drive away.
For a longer day out, the state capital, Shimla, is within reach. It’s a classic hill-station, with a pedestrian-only Mall Road and the historic Viceregal Lodge. The most scenic way to approach Shimla is via the Kalka-Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The toy train moves slowly through more than a hundred tunnels, offering a different perspective on the landscape.
By Air: The nearest major airport is in Chandigarh (IXC), which is well-connected to the rest of the country and a reliable entry point. Shimla’s airport at Jubbarhatti (SLV) is closer but has very limited, weather-dependent flights.
By Rail: The main railhead on the plains is Chandigarh. From Kalka, you can catch the narrow-gauge toy train up to Shimla, a journey in itself.
By Road: The home is connected by road from the plains. Kasauli and Solan are nearby towns on the route up to Shimla. Driving in the hills is slow. Expect hairpin bends and single-lane stretches. A 100km journey can easily take 4-6 hours.
The best seasons are from March to June, when the snow has melted and summer arrives, and again from September to November for clear skies after the monsoon. The monsoon months of July and August can bring heavy rain and landslides on the main national highways. From December to February, the upper reaches around Shimla and Kufri often receive snowfall.
