Lachen is the base for exploring North Sikkim. The main draw is Yumthang Valley, often called the valley of flowers. It's a day trip from Lachen, best visited in the spring (March to May) when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. The journey itself is the reward, with winding roads and dramatic Himalayan landscapes.
While not a day trip from Lachen, most visitors pass Tsomgo Lake on their way from Gangtok. Located about 40km from the capital, this glacial lake is frozen solid in winter. A permit is required to visit, which can be arranged in Gangtok.
Getting there.
By Air: The most reliable airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, approximately a 4-5 hour drive (124 km) to Gangtok. From Gangtok, Lachen is another 4-5 hour drive. Pakyong Airport (PYG) is closer to Gangtok but flights are often diverted due to weather.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), next to Bagdogra. From NJP, you can hire a taxi to Gangtok, and then another to Lachen.
By Road: Lachen is in North Sikkim and requires a permit. Most travelers hire a vehicle from Gangtok, the state capital, where permits are processed. The drive is scenic but on mountain roads.
Best time to visit.
The best time for clear skies and mountain views is from October to mid-December. Spring, from March to May, is when the rhododendrons and other wildflowers bloom across the state, especially in Yumthang Valley. The monsoon season (June to September) often causes landslides, and roads to North Sikkim can be closed.
