Nohkalikai Falls drops 340 metres straight down into a deep green pool, holding the title of India's tallest plunge waterfall. The viewpoint sits a short drive from the home, best visited early in the day before mountain mist rolls over the cliff edge.

The Nongriat Double-Decker Living Root Bridge requires descending over 3,500 stone steps into the forest canyon. Many travelers choose to trek down for an overnight stay near the river; the host at this home happily stores heavy luggage overnight so you can hike light down the stairs.

Mawsmai Cave and Krem Phyllut provide easy limestone cave explorations close to Cherrapunji town. Mawsmai is well-lit with wooden walkways and narrow rock squeezes that require no technical gear, making it ideal for an adventurous subterranean walk.

Guwahati Railway Station sits 100 km from Shillong and serves as the primary railhead for visitors travelling into Meghalaya. Since no railway lines run across the Khasi Hills, travelers hire direct taxis or shared cabs from Guwahati up to Cherrapunji.

Guwahati Airport (GAU) sits 100 km from Shillong and provides frequent domestic flights from major Indian cities. The drive from Guwahati airport to Cherrapunji takes around four to five hours depending on mountain traffic along the Shillong bypass.

Shillong Airport (SHL) at Umroi sits 30 km from Shillong city, operating limited regional flights mostly connected through Kolkata. From Shillong town, Cherrapunji (Sohra) is a 53 km drive along a winding 2-hour mountain highway.

Best time to visit.

October through April brings clear blue skies, crisp air, and dry trekking trails across Sohra. Mornings can feel chilly, but midday sun makes exploring waterfalls, riverbeds, and root bridges pleasant.

Monsoon season runs from June through September, bringing over 10,000 mm of rain to the Cherrapunji plateau. While heavy rain causes some caves and steep river steps to close, the surrounding hills turn intense green and plunge waterfalls flow at full force.
