Rolep itself is a quiet village, a place for walks and birdwatching. The nearby hanging bridge is over a century old, and Buddha Falls is a short distance away. For wider exploration of Sikkim, you will likely pass through Gangtok.
From Gangtok, you can arrange a day trip to Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake. It sits at 12,400 ft, about 40km away, and freezes over in the winter. A permit is required.
Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa Lama, is a 24km drive from Gangtok and one of the most significant monasteries in the region.
If you have a North Sikkim permit, the trip to Yumthang Valley is essential, especially during the spring flower bloom. The journey starts from Lachung, about 125km from Gangtok.
For serious trekkers, the classic Goecha La trek for views of Kanchenjunga's base camp begins from Yuksom in West Sikkim. Pelling, also in West Sikkim, is home to the historic Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling monasteries.
The most reliable airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, which is 124km away and takes about 4-5 hours by road. Sikkim’s own airport, Pakyong (PYG), is closer to Gangtok (30km), but flights are often diverted to Bagdogra due to weather.
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), 122km away. From both the airport and the station, you will need to hire a private or shared taxi for the journey into Sikkim. Gangtok is the state capital and the main hub for arranging transport and the necessary travel permits.
The best seasons for Sikkim are spring and autumn. March to May is when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the valleys, a spectacular sight. October to mid-December offers crisp air and the clearest views of the Himalayan peaks, including Kanchenjunga. The monsoon months, from June to September, see heavy rain and frequent landslides that can shut down roads, especially in North Sikkim.
