Rolep serves as a base for exploring East Sikkim. The state capital, Gangtok, is the main hub for arranging transport and permits.
From Gangtok, you can take a day trip to Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake. It sits at an altitude of 12,400 ft and is about 40km away. The lake is often frozen in winter. Note that a permit is required to visit.
Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa Lama, is another significant site, located 24km from Gangtok. It's a sprawling complex with a rich history and a peaceful atmosphere.
If you are planning a longer Sikkim itinerary, you can travel onward to West Sikkim for Pelling’s monasteries, like Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling, and views of Kanchenjunga. For the classic Kanchenjunga base camp experience, the Goecha La trek starts from Yuksom in West Sikkim. North Sikkim, with the famed Yumthang Valley, requires a separate permit and is best visited outside the monsoon season.
By Air: The most reliable airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, approximately 124km away. From there, it’s a 4 to 5-hour drive to the Gangtok region. Pakyong Airport (PYG) is much closer to Gangtok (30km), but its operations are often disrupted by weather, with flights frequently diverting to Bagdogra.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located 122km away. It is well-connected to major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. From NJP, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Gangtok and then onward to Rolep.
By Road: Gangtok is the central road hub of Sikkim. You can hire private vehicles or find shared taxis from Siliguri, NJP, or Bagdogra to reach Gangtok. From Gangtok, you will need to arrange further transport to Rolep.
The best time to visit Sikkim is during two main windows. From March to May, the weather is pleasant, and the state’s famous rhododendrons are in full bloom. The second window is from October to mid-December, after the monsoon, when the skies are clear, offering crisp views of the Himalayan peaks.
The monsoon season, from late June to September, brings heavy rain, which can cause landslides and frequent road closures. It is generally advisable to avoid this period for travel, especially to remote areas.
