Things to do nearby.
Gulmarg itself is the main attraction. The Gulmarg Gondola, the second-highest cable car in the world, is a short drive away and offers two stages of ascent for panoramic views and access to ski slopes in the winter.
For a day trip, you can drive towards Srinagar, about 50 km away. There, you can take a shikara ride on the iconic Dal Lake, weaving between the houseboats and floating markets. The city is also home to the Mughal gardens - Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi - which are beautiful in the spring and autumn.
Further afield, you can plan longer excursions to Pahalgam (about 145 km from Gulmarg) to see the Lidder river and the Bollywood-famous Aru and Betaab valleys. Sonamarg, the ‘meadow of gold’, is another stunning destination, serving as the gateway to the Zoji La pass and offering short treks to the Thajiwas glacier.
Getting there.
The nearest major airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar (SXR), roughly 50 km away. It has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other major Indian cities. The drive from the airport to Gulmarg takes about two hours. The alternate airport is in Jammu (IXJ), about 340 km away, used when weather affects flights to Srinagar.
The closest railway station is in Banihal, 160 km away. However, most travelers prefer to drive from Srinagar or Jammu. Taxis and pre-booked cars are readily available from the airport.
Best time to visit.
The best time to visit depends on what you want to see. April through June is spring, when the meadows are green and the famous tulip garden in Srinagar is in full bloom. The weather is pleasant and clear.
September and October bring autumn, when the leaves of the chinar trees turn gold and red, painting the valley in warm colours. The air is crisp, and the skies are often clear, offering great views of the peaks.
For snow, visit between December and February. Gulmarg transforms into a premier ski resort, with deep powder and active slopes. The landscape is covered in a thick blanket of white, and the gondola becomes the main artery for skiers and sightseers.
