Srinagar is the hub for exploring the valley. The Dal Lake is the city’s heart, where you can take a shikara ride through floating markets and past houseboats. The Mughal gardens - Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi - are a short drive away, known for their terraced lawns and water channels.
For day trips, Gulmarg is about 50 km away. Its two-stage gondola is one of the highest in the world, rising to nearly 4,000 metres for views of the surrounding peaks. In winter, it's a major ski destination. Pahalgam, about 95 km from Srinagar, is the gateway to the Lidder valley. From here, you can visit the Aru and Betaab valleys, both famed for their meadows and streams. Sonamarg, the 'meadow of gold', is about 87 km away and the starting point for a short trek to the Thajiwas glacier.

By Road: Srinagar is well-connected by road. It serves as the base for reaching other key destinations in the valley, including Pahalgam (95 km), Gulmarg (50 km), and Sonamarg (87 km).
Best time to visit.
Kashmir has distinct seasons, each with its own character. Spring, from April to June, is when the valley is in bloom with tulips and apple blossoms. The weather is pleasant for sightseeing.
Autumn, from September to October, is another popular time. The air is crisp and the leaves of the chinar trees turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.
Winter runs from December to February. While Srinagar sees some snowfall, the higher reaches of Gulmarg and Pahalgam are covered in deep snow, making it the prime season for skiing and other winter sports. The monsoon months of July and August see rainfall, and can coincide with the Amarnath yatra, which sometimes leads to road restrictions.
