Sunlight filters through a wooden jaali screen at the entrance, casting patterns on the floor. This is a new home, built with modern comforts and a sense of Kashmiri welcome. The owner, Sajad, and his assistant, Afratul, are often around to help. The home has six bedrooms, each with its own attached bathroom, sleeping up to 12 people in total. Every room has a view of the mountains. The stay is kid-friendly and has Wi-Fi, power backup, and geysers for hot water. Room heaters are available on request, and there is parking on site for those driving in. While meals are not part of the standard booking, guests have access to the kitchen, and authentic local food can be arranged. Guests often speak of the host more than the home itself. As one visitor from Kerala wrote, "Dear Sajad Bhai the owner itself is so helpful and a best friend so that we feel like we are home." Srinagar is the hub for exploring the Kashmir Valley. From here, you can take day trips or longer journeys to the region's most famous sights.

Dal Lake is the heart of Srinagar. The best way to see it is from a shikara, a small wooden boat that glides past floating markets, gardens, and houseboats.

The Mughal gardens - Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi - are a short drive from the city center. They are known for their terraced lawns, cascading fountains, and chinar trees, especially beautiful in spring and autumn.

Gulmarg, about 50km from Srinagar, is a meadow that turns into a premier ski resort in winter. The Gulmarg Gondola, a two-stage cable car, rises to nearly 4,000 metres for wide views of the Pir Panjal range.

Pahalgam, 95km away, is a town on the banks of the Lidder River. A short drive past the town takes you to the Aru and Betaab valleys, both famous for their meadows and as starting points for treks.

Sonamarg, the 'meadow of gold', is 87km from Srinagar and serves as the gateway to the Zoji La pass. A short trek or pony ride from the meadow leads to the Thajiwas glacier.

Getting there.

By Air: The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar (SXR), with direct flights from major Indian cities. In case of bad weather, flights are often diverted to Jammu Airport (IXJ), which is about 290km away.

By Rail: The closest major railhead is in Banihal, 110km from Srinagar. The line is part of the larger Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway project, which is still under construction.

By Road: Srinagar is the main road hub of the valley. The home is a good starting point for drives to Gulmarg (50km), Pahalgam (95km), and Sonamarg (87km).

Seasons

Best time to visit.

Kashmir has three distinct seasons for travel. April through June is spring, when the tulip gardens are in full bloom and the valleys are filled with blossoms. September and October bring autumn, with clear skies and the famous red and gold leaves of the chinar trees. For snow, visit between December and February, when Gulmarg and Pahalgam are covered in white and open for winter sports.
