Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse, is the largest monastery in India. Founded in the 17th century, it’s a sprawling complex overlooking the valley. It’s an active centre for Buddhist learning and culture.
Sela Pass & Sela Lake sit at an altitude of 4,170 metres. The pass is the main artery connecting Tawang to the rest of India and is often covered in snow. The lake by its side stays frozen for much of the winter. The drive itself is the main event.
Madhuri Lake, originally Sangetsar Tso, is about 45km from Tawang. It was formed by an earthquake and is named after the actress Madhuri Dixit, who filmed a song here. The landscape of submerged trees is stark and beautiful.
Ziro Valley is further afield, a multiday trip from Tawang, but it is the heartland of the Apatani people. Known for its unique paddy-and-fish cultivation and bamboo groves, the valley is especially vibrant during the Ziro Music Festival in September.
Bumla Pass is on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, 37km from Tawang. The high-altitude pass requires a special permit from the army, but offers a rare glimpse into this sensitive border region. The journey is only possible in clear weather.
By Air: The nearest major airport is Guwahati (GAU), about 480km away. Tezpur (TEZ) is closer at 320km, but has fewer flight connections. From either airport, the journey to Tawang is a two-day drive.
By Rail: The closest railhead is Rangapara North (RPAN), 280km from Tawang. From there, you will need to hire a taxi for the multi-day road journey.
By Road: The drive is the only way to reach Tawang. The route enters Arunachal at Bhalukpong, where permits are checked. Most travellers make an overnight stop in Bomdila (165km from Bhalukpong) before continuing over Sela Pass to Tawang (another 155km). Expect winding mountain roads.
The best months to visit are from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. Post-monsoon, from September to October, the skies are clear and the views are sharp. Winter, from December to February, sees heavy snowfall, and Sela Pass can close for days at a time, cutting off Tawang.
