Atal Tunnel sits roughly an hour south down the valley. The 9km tunnel connects the Kullu valley to Lahaul year-round, cutting down hours of steep climbing over the old pass. Drive through early in the morning for clear tarmac and dramatic views as you transition between mountain zones.

Solang Valley lies just beyond the southern portal of the tunnel. It is a key stop for adventure sports, ropeway rides, and river walks before ascending higher into Lahaul.

Old Manali, Hadimba Devi Temple, and Vashisht Hot Springs are situated further south down the highway near Manali. Vashisht offers natural sulfur hot baths that riders often use to soak off trail dust, while Old Manali provides quiet bakeries and apple orchard trails.

The Spiti Loop branches east toward Kaza, Ki Monastery, and Kibber. This route is open primarily between June and October via the Manali-Keylong road link, offering high-desert landscapes and historic Tibetan monasteries.

Getting there.

Bhuntar Airport in Kullu is the closest regional air hub for trips into Lahaul and Keylong. Flights operate weather permitting, followed by a drive north through the Atal Tunnel.

Chandigarh International Airport serves as the main all-weather plains backup. It handles frequent domestic flights from major Indian cities and connects to Keylong via a scenic day drive up NH-21.

Chandigarh Railway Station and Kalka Railway Station are the primary railheads for traveling into Himachal Pradesh. Kalka connects to the UNESCO heritage toy train up to Shimla, while Chandigarh provides direct highway access up toward Lahaul.

Manali acts as the major road transit hub for the valley. From Manali, buses, shared taxis, and private vehicles head north through the Atal Tunnel directly into the Keylong valley corridor.

Best time to visit.

March through June brings clear summer days, mountain snow-melt along high ridges, and cool temperatures for valley drives. It is an ideal window for travelers heading up from the plains to escape the summer heat.

September through November offers crisp air, sharp mountain clarity, and clear blue skies across Lahaul. October and November mark the peak season for mountain views and high-altitude photography before heavy winter snowfall sets in.

July and August bring the monsoon season. Heavy rains along NH-3 and NH-21 can cause frequent landslides and road delays, making travel slower across the mountain sections.

December through February sees heavy snowfall across Lahaul and Keylong. While winter transforms the landscape into deep snow fields, sub-zero temperatures and icy road conditions mean travel requires careful preparation and winter gear.
